Sleepless in Santa Rosa

I have no excuse - I just have forgotten how to sleep. I toss and turn and write potent messages to political figures who have screwed up royally and are ruining our country. But then, what do I know? I used to fantasize about being elected to public office - but how to start? First of all, I realized I can't just fire everyone who pisses me off, or doesn't do their job. Bummer. That would simplify matters.

Perhaps I can vent my frustrations in a blog that no-one will read except me!

How can people be so foolish as to vote against their own interests? Can't they see that they fought tooth and nail against Medicare and now cling to it like it's a life raft? People need quality health care and they need it to be affordable. I'm convinced that a country such as ours - even in these dire times - CAN afford to provide this.

Puleeze, if a country like the UK can do it - and I grant you they've had years to refine it - but really. And don't even ask me about France. I'm not asking for the kind of health care they offer. I just don't want the poor, indigent, people with prior illnesses, children and elderly to be without recourse.

I'm a retired nurse. The last 6 years of my working life I was a home health nurse. I saw such poverty, isolation and neglect among the elderly - some of them only saw the home health nurse and the mailman in the course of their week! Then our visits were cut! I sometimes think of those people we dug out of their mire, fed and cleaned them up, filled their medication boxes - threw away the old medications they would inevitably take along with any new ones ordered - and just listened to and paid attention to their needs. How many times did we manage to abort a hospitalization by our timely interventions? And things got worse..............

How is it that the "powers that be" never figured out how much money we saved them by not having these people end up in emergency rooms or deteriorate to conditions that involved lengthy and expensive hospitalizations?

A pox on both the houses - the liberal left who want all or nothing and the conservative right who want nothing at all. Unless, of course, it's in their immediate district.

A pox on the politicians who only look at their chances of re-election and don't serve the people they were elected to care for - and a bigger pox yet on those who delude the ignorant with tales of the dire consequences of "government interference" while stealing from them.

OK that's my rant for this insomniac night. Sleep well folks. I don't.
